Despite the doldrums that have plagued the travel industry during the COVID-19 pandemic, Allegiant announced Tuesday it is expanding its service offerings across the U.S., including at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Highlights include the addition of three new cities to Allegiant’s route map: Portland, Oregon; Key West, Florida; and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

“Today, travelers are seeking destinations that allow them the chance to recreate in a safe way, usually outdoors,” said Drew Wells, Allegiant’s vice president of revenue and planning. “The three cities we’re adding to our network — Key West, Portland and Jackson Hole — are gateways to some of the United States’ most scenic destinations, including national parks and other outdoor attractions that are in high demand.”

The ultra-low cost carrier also announced the launch of eight routes that had been delayed by the onset of the pandemic, including twice-weekly PIT-Norfolk International Airport (ORF) service, which will debut June 3 after previously being planned for May 2020.

That seasonal route will be the 14th nonstop destination from PIT for Allegiant, second only to Southwest, the busiest carrier at PIT. Recent market research indicates that the Pittsburgh market is a top 10 feeder to the popular Virginia Beach leisure region, which ORF serves.
