One of the best parts about working at an airport is being able to watch airplanes all day. And we get paid to do it.

That is part of what makes the enthusiasts affectionately dubbed “aviation geeks”—av geeks, for short—so impressive: they do it purely for their love of flight.

Av geeks are devoted, knowledgeable fans of all things aviation: civilian and military aircraft, aeronautics, airfields and more. And one of the ways they pursue this passion is through photography.

Many of the images published in our Photos of the Week feature were submitted by av geeks, including this week’s pair.

Fourteen-year-old Gavin Taylor is a perfect example of av geek enthusiasm right here in Pittsburgh.

“I have always wanted to catch a Southwest Airlines special livery, and I saw it was coming on (plane-tracking website) Flightradar24,” he wrote us. “I asked my dad if we could go, and he said, ‘Yes.’”

Gavin and his father rushed to PIT, where he captured a photo of Southwest’s unique Nevada One livery on a Boeing 737-700 in April.

Sometimes a passion for aviation runs in the family. Tom Troutman is a pilot for Republic Airways who says he “grew up in a USAir family and basically grew up on the airfield.”
