There is so much beauty in aviation.

We try to feature some of it in this space each week, whether it’s the sleek design of a unique plane or an aerial shot of a tropical island.

Those two aspects—manmade and natural—contrast and complement each other throughout our world, and the symbiotic nature of that relationship really gets to the core of what makes aviation beautiful.

For example, Jason Ballard captured this breathtaking view of our air traffic control tower during a recent sunrise.

The ATCT is probably the most important building on any airfield, a tower loaded with precise technology and human expertise that keep aircraft moving safely in the air and on the ground. Seeing our tower with this masterpiece of a morning sky makes us appreciate it even more.

Of course, there’s a grittier side to flight. It takes a lot of hard work, often in unpleasant environments and conditions, to keep airports open and aircraft safe.

We’re still waiting on our first snowstorm of the season here in Pittsburgh, but we know it’s coming, which is why our field crews stay prepared to clear the runways and roadways around PIT 24/7.

Our friends at Newark Liberty International Airport know exactly what we’re talking about. This image from a couple of years ago, taken by Laura Woodside, shows you exactly what those crews have to deal with each winter.

Well-trained men and women dedicated to keeping their airport operational even in the worst weather. It’s a beautiful sight.
