March comes in like a lion and goes out like a, er, bigger lion?

The weather in Pittsburgh in late winter and early spring can be quite inconsistent from one day to the next. We saw nearly 70-degree days last week—now it’s snowing again.

But, what’s (almost) always consistent is that it’s going to be cold on the day of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in this town. This year was no different. Revelers awoke to find a few inches of snow on the ground to greet them.

Beverly Beisgen found the same at Pittsburgh International Airport that March 12 morning. In fact, she captured this shot of an Alaska Airlines plane at the gate heading to be de-iced before leaving for Seattle. A special thanks to the de-icing and snow crews who worked hard that morning!

A week later, on March 19, the weather was warmer and clearer. That allowed Simon Brown to capture a photo of a National Airlines 747-400 on approach to PIT on a cargo run. Boeing’s 747 jumbo jets are nicknamed the “Queens of the Skies” for their iconic, sloped design.
