Aspiring illustrator Corinne Antonelli was only a sophomore in college when she was given a canvas most artists can only dream of.

In 2019, the New Jersey native majoring in illustration at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla., was named one of the two winners of United Airlines’ “Her Art Here” contest. The prize? Seeing her unique design turned into a livery for a Boeing 757-200.

The contest was intended to give female artists the chance to use an airplane as their canvas and inspire other women interested in a career in the arts, according to the airline.

Open to those who identify as a woman and reside in the United States, artists were asked to visually represent either New York/New Jersey or California, two key markets for the airline, while combining United’s mission with what the communities mean to them.

Antonelli’s design includes the historic Red Mill in New Jersey, the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty, as well as a globe signaling United’s worldwide connectivity. (Tsungwei Moo, a Taiwanese artist who lives in San Francisco, was named the winner for the California design.)

Now Antonelli’s art is being seen by countless people every day; United estimates the 757 her work adorns flies 1.6 million miles a year.
