Though fewer travelers are expected to pass through Pittsburgh International this season, the airport still has plans to get into the holiday spirit.

PIT’s annual festivities traditionally begin with the addition of a holiday tree to its Airside Terminal Center Core. On Nov. 17, a crew of nearly 20 people worked to raise the 26-foot-tall tree over a span of eight hours. This year’s tree features 538 ornaments, 42 yards of fabric and 166 strands of lights.

Additionally, other festive trees, wreaths and garlands will be on display throughout the terminal.

Not all of the airport’s holiday traditions will return this year, though.

Due to ongoing efforts to minimize the spread of COVID-19, PIT’s annual Holiday Open House will not take place for the first time since the event began in 2013. The airport also will not hold its holiday concert series this year. The program, which featured local school choirs and bands, has been a lasting tradition that began in the days of the former Greater Pittsburgh Airport terminal.

However, in an effort to welcome passengers choosing to travel in coming weeks, PIT has a number of fun, healthy and safe festivities planned. Activities include a holiday-themed selfie station in the Airside Center Core, safe and socially distanced (instrument-only) performances by local musicians and visits from the PIT PAWS airport therapy dog team.
