Airports are a 24/7 operation, 365 days a year.

Whether it’s the middle of the night or frigid outside, airports are open and ready to serve passengers and the planes they fly on.

That operational readiness—and focus on public safety—is something that’s been fully evident this past week as two snowfalls and sub-freezing temperatures hit the region a week from the first official day of spring.

Earlier this winter, Blue Sky News documented what it’s like on the airfield during an overnight snowstorm. But on an average winter day, it’s about keeping the airfield running smoothly and deicing before takeoff.

Dylan Rossman captured a Bombardier Global 7500 private jet overhead as it was preparing to land on Runway 28R at PIT in the middle of a February night, the plane’s landing lights aglow.

Similarly, Barb Durci of Sarver, Pa., was getting ready to fly to Fort Myers, Fla., from PIT on Southwest in February. Before takeoff in the freezing temperatures, the plane stopped for deicing and Barb captured one of the crews deicing the wing.
