When Pittsburgh International Airport opened in 1992, its eight-mile baggage system was the largest in the U.S. Take a look at PIT’s baggage system by the numbers:

  • The system covers the distance from Point State Park to the Pittsburgh Zoo
  • More than 60 airport employees oversee and maintain the eight-mile baggage system
  • Nearly 1,500 motors, of which there are 70 different kinds, power the system
  • Approximately 4.5 million pieces of luggage are processed through the baggage system at PIT annually
