Work to prepare the construction site for a new modern terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport is officially underway between Concourses C and D, or what airport employees know as the west ramp.
Construction cameras on the roof of Concourse D captured a flurry of activity from week 1, April 5-9, as early site access contractors Independence Excavating, Westmoreland Electric and W.G. Tomko began installing barricades and fencing to outline the site and delineate safe driving lanes for baggage tugs and other airport vehicles.
In addition to that work, Taxiway Bravo next to the northern runway has been closed to form the construction vehicle and equipment entrance roadway, safely isolating the haul route and construction site away from public roadways and the active airfield.
These are the first visible signs of progress on the Terminal Modernization Program, a billion-dollar effort to build a new 700,000-square-foot terminal that consolidates ticketing, security checkpoints and baggage claim, and a multi-modal complex that includes a new 3,300-space parking garage, rental car facilities and entrance roadways designed to improve the passenger experience.
More changes and activities are scheduled for the coming weeks, including saw cutting through 17 inches of ramp concrete and slab removal of about 300,000 square feet of material.
