Photo of the Week: Sunrise Over Iceland

In May, Pittsburgh International Airport launched a nonstop flight to Reykjavik, Iceland, on Icelandair – and for two more months, PIT travelers still have a chance to take advantage of that route before it finishes flying nonstop for the year.

PIT’s nonstop service on Icelandair is seasonal, operating from May until the end of October. Lucky for Pittsburghers, autumn is one of the best times to visit the land of fire and ice. As the seasons change, the days get shorter, giving travelers a better chance to see the elusive Northern Lights.

The first photo this week comes from Ethan Roebuck, a local Pittsburgher who captured Icelandair taking off from PIT. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 shines against a clear blue backdrop, complementing the airline’s staple mints and dark blues.

Laurie Holding captured these snowy glaciers at sunrise over Reykjavik. Although Icelandic summers are known for the unique 24-hour sunlight, that doesn’t stop the snow. However, in the fall, visitors can expect chilly weather before snow blankets the country all winter.
