U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg toured the new Pittsburgh International Airport construction site last week, noting the impressive progress since his last visit. He said the airport project was “one of the largest and most significant in the country.”

“It also feels like a full circle moment because I remember being here with the first lady about a year and a half ago looking at the cutting-edge labor practices around safety – and making it easier for working parents to have good-paying jobs on the site thanks to the childcare facility that’s here,” Buttigieg said to reporters inside the new terminal on Friday, Jan. 10.

Buttigieg toured the site with Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis and Chief Development Officer Paul Hoback among others.

“Very impressed to see the progress on a major project at Pittsburgh International Airport,” he posted on Instagram later. “With support from our administration, this new terminal will improve the experience for passengers at PIT while creating a more efficient and sustainable transportation future.”

“We’ve seen how an airport can be a major economic engine, not just for the people who work in and around the operations of the airport, but because of what it makes possible for the community that it serves,” he said.

His visit to the region included a tour of Pittsburgh’s rivers, a ride on Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s subway system and a visit with Carnegie Mellon University researchers at Mill 19 in Hazelwood.
