The new Pittsburgh International Airport will get its biggest crowd yet Saturday when elected leaders gather to cut the ceremonial ribbon on the new facility just before more than 10,000 people arrive for a public Open House.
The Ribbon Cutting will feature remarks from several elected leaders, including County Executive Sara Innamorato. The Ribbon Cutting does not mark the opening day for the new terminal, which will occur this fall. The date will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Ribbon Cutting signifies the beginning of this new era while also providing an opportunity to thank the many partners, stakeholders and members of the community who have supported this vision and helped make it a reality.
“We’re excited to welcome so many key supporters to the new terminal this weekend,” said Vince Gastgeb, PIT’s Chief Government & Corporate Affairs Officer, who will emcee the event. “This new terminal is emblematic of the thriving Pittsburgh of today and will continue to drive regional economic growth into the future.”
The formal Ribbon Cutting program will begin at 9:30 a.m. A Community Open House, the new terminal’s largest public event, will follow beginning at noon with over 10,000 individuals registered. Media is also invited to attend both events.
This week’s Ribbon Cutting and Open House are the latest in a series of events leading up to the new terminal opening this fall and features key industry and local leaders celebrating the monumental project and the people who made it possible.
The airport has already completed a successful staff Friends and Family Day, a first Public Trial in September, and the celebration gala last week. Still to come is the second Public Trial, which is expected to host more than 2,000 volunteers to test the airport’s systems from check-in to the security checkpoint to baggage claim.
Community Day will feature a variety of activities for all ages with multiple community partners including the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and Kamin Science Center, offering interactive, educational and hands-on activations.
The Open House is free and open to all ages. Registration began in August and all 10,000 time slots are filled.
