If you want to visit the U.K. this year, you’ll need more than a passport and a British Airways ticket.
Starting on Jan. 8, U.S. citizens also will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom, regardless of whether the trip is for tourism, business or a short-term educational experience.
An ETA generally allows a traveler to spend up to six months in the U.K. but does not replace a visa for other cases. ETAs are valid for two years and you can travel to the U.K. as many times as you want during that time. But if you get a new passport, you will need a new ETA.
An ETA does not guarantee entry; you still need to either see a Border Force officer or use an ePassport gate.
More Pittsburghers need to be aware of the change because British Airways is increasing its nonstop service between Pittsburgh International Airport and London Heathrow Airport from six days a week to seven days starting March 31. It will be the first time the route will operate daily since its introduction in 2019.
Here are some FAQs from the U.K. official website:
How do you apply for an ETA?
The fastest way is to use the UK ETA app. If you cannot use the app, you can apply online. Note: If you are applying for someone else who is not with you, you should apply online.
How much does it cost?
Applications are 10 British pounds (approximately $12.50, with exchange rates subject to change). You can pay with a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
How long does it take?
You will usually get a decision within three working days, but you can travel while a decision is pending once you receive email confirmation that your application is being processed.
What documents do I need to apply?
You need to upload photos of your passport and the face of the person applying.
Do babies and children need an ETA?
Everyone traveling needs an ETA, including babies and children. But you can apply for other people.
What are the exceptions?
You don’t need an ETA if you have a visa; have permission to live, work or study in the U.K.; have dual British or Irish citizenship with a British passport, Irish passport or other passport containing a certificate of entitlement; or are traveling with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport.
