Everybody enjoys an air show—including the pilots.
Air Force Capt. Lindsay Johnson probably had more fun than anyone else earlier this month during the Shop ’n Save Westmoreland Airshow about 35 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Johnson spent part of her childhood in Western Pennsylvania and still has strong family ties to the area, according to TribLIVE. In fact, she stayed with her aunt while in town for the performance.
“I’m able to bring something that’s so important to me to the people who are so important to me,” she said.
A nine-year veteran, Johnson pilots the A-10C Thunderbolt II, introduced in the 1970s as the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. Often referred to as “the Warthog,” it is armed with an autocannon and a wide variety of munitions.
The twin-engine aircraft offers excellent maneuverability and operates well at low airspeeds and altitudes, making it an ideal participant in air shows. Johnson performed several different rolls and even a slow flyby in which she addressed the crowd via radio hookup.
Ryan McManus photographed Johnson in action, soaring over crowds cheering on one of their own.
Thank you for your service, Capt. Johnson. And thanks, Ryan!
