Alaska and aviation go hand in hand.

July and August are the best times of year to go to Alaska. Casper Wood did just that and he sent us a photo of a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser.

Aviation is a large part of life for many Alaskans. Some communities in Alaska need fuel, groceries and other supplies to be transported by air because road access is limited or seasonal. Flying just makes more sense.

Casper Wood sent us this photo of a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, a typical plane used in the Alaskan frontier. Like many such planes, it’s equipped to land on water. The Super Cruiser has floats on the bottom, allowing it to use lakes and ponds as its runways.

Down in Washington state, Matt Slafka took this amazing photo of this Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-900ER taking off from Seattle.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is a great way to get to Alaska from Pittsburgh, as Alaska Airlines has up to two daily flights from Pittsburgh to Seattle.

Summer is the best time to experience the mountains, rivers, glaciers, wildlife and national parks that Alaska has to offer.

Thank you, Casper and Matt, for your incredible photos!

Our readers continue to pass along shots of unique aircraft, international airports, historical events, gorgeous views and even family vacation photos for this feature. We love them! Keep them coming — you can click here for submission guidelines.
