Photos of the Week: Deicing Sunrises and Sunsets

Winter, despite landing at the bottom of many people’s favorite seasons list, never fails to provide sun-streaked skies at dawn and twilight. So, what could make them better? Aircraft, of course.

Our first photo this week comes from Charlotte Siobhán, who captured a Delta Airbus A319 under the sunset. Those orange, pinks and yellows complement Delta’s signature white, navy and red fuselage beautifully.

If you’re one of the Pittsburgh International Airport passengers who prefers the seemingly never-ending snow, you’re in luck. PIT now offers nonstop flights on Delta to Salt Lake City, Utah.

If you do stick around for the snow in Pittsburgh, don’t worry; PIT has you covered. Michael McCormick snapped an early morning photo of deicing in action at the airport just as the sun started to rise over PIT’s airfield. Snow removal and deicing teams at the airport work around the clock to help ensure flights can take off and land as usual.

In 2024, PIT hosted the Northeast Chapter Hub Airports Winter Operations and Deicing Conference with representatives from airports across the country. As experts in snow removal, leaders from PIT’s airport operations team helped shape the curriculum for part of the conference to make sure snow fighters at airports everywhere know how to manage snow and ice on the airfield.
