As Americans exercise their right to vote this election season, we thought it appropriate to feature views of the nation’s emblems of democracy.
Let’s start with the U.S. Capitol Building, which opened in 1800, though marrying it with aviation would take a bit longer.
It wouldn’t be until 141 years later, when Washington National Airport opened in 1941, that the general public could take in spectacular views of the Capitol on a regular basis during takeoffs and landings. The airport was renamed Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in 1998 but remains DCA to aviation buffs.
Built less than five miles from the Capitol Building and just over five miles from the White House, the airport provides close access to our nation’s capital and great views, both of planes and landmarks.
