It didn’t take long for the first big snow of 2025 to arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Early Friday morning, snowfall blanketed much of the region as the busy morning rush of departing flights began at PIT. But snow removal crews were already in action maintaining safe operations at the airport.

As overnighted airplanes covered in snow made their way from the terminal to the deicing pad, crews got to work removing snow and ice from each aircraft. Sitting inside cabs above trucks, crew members operate a nozzle to spray hot deicing fluid that instantly melts snow and ice.

Meanwhile on the airfield’s taxiways and runways, waves of huge snow removal trucks and equipment made frequent passes, clearing snow so planes could safely take off and land.

More snow came down at PIT Monday morning as part of a winter storm stretching from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic. The storm put much of the Pittsburgh region under a winter weather advisory through Monday night with up to 4 additional inches of snow expected, according to the National Weather Service.

PIT snow crews were active once again throughout the day Monday with minimal delays and cancellations at the airport. The majority of impacted flights were to and from Washington, D.C., where snowfall totals were expected to exceed 12 inches.

Passengers should check with airlines for the status of flights before arriving at the airport for their scheduled departure time.
