Pittsburgh International Airport is introducing a dedicated TSA PreCheck Touchless ID lane at the airport’s security checkpoint to further streamline operations.
The new lane, beginning Oct. 13, comes nearly one year after the opening of PIT’s new terminal, giving PIT and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) valuable real-world experience and data on how travelers use the new facility.
Since opening, PIT and TSA have monitored checkpoint operations, traveler flow and screening patterns to identify opportunities to improve the layout and use of available space. The upcoming changes reflect those insights and allow PIT and TSA to make targeted adjustments based on how travelers use the checkpoint.
Participation in Touchless ID is voluntary. TSA advises passengers to have a REAL ID-compliant or other acceptable form of identification available in case requested by a TSA officer.
TSA PreCheck Touchless ID uses facial comparison technology to streamline identity verification for eligible travelers. TSA PreCheck members with a valid passport can opt in with an active airline profile with a participating airline or Google Wallet and then use the newly dedicated Touchless ID lane.
A Touchless ID indicator must appear on a traveler’s mobile boarding pass before entering the dedicated lane. Participating airlines include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.
The process eliminates the need for travelers to present a physical ID during the initial identity verification step. TSA says the technology is designed to make identity verification more efficient while enhancing the passenger experience.
The program also includes privacy protections. TSA does not use Touchless ID images for law enforcement or surveillance purposes and does not share them with other entities. TSA deletes the photo and personal data within 24 hours of the scheduled flight departure. More information is available through TSA and the DHS Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs).
PIT is one of more than 65 airports nationwide offering the program.
