Sustainability and environmental initiatives at Pittsburgh International Airport earned major recognition during May, with the airport receiving the 2026 Sustainability Leadership Award from the Pennsylvania Environmental Council in addition to the Green Building Alliance naming the airport’s new terminal as the recipient of its 2026 Vanguard Award.
The Sustainability Leadership Award recognized PIT’s innovative and sustainable approach to recent renovations. Renewable energy installations, plans for sustainable aviation fuel and clean hydrogen production, and biophilic design features in its newly constructed terminal situate PIT at the forefront of sustainable air travel nationwide.
The award also recognized PIT’s industry-leading commitment to resiliency and reducing environmental impact across its operations and infrastructure. The airport has become a national model for resilient and sustainable aviation practices through innovative energy strategies, responsible land use, and forward-thinking energy initiatives.
Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, accepted the award at the 2026 Western Pennsylvania Environmental Awards. The awards ceremony took place on May 6.
The airport’s new terminal was also honored with the 2026 Vanguard Award by the Green Building Alliance for sustainable design, community-focused approach, and for advancing Pittsburgh’s green building efforts. The award was presented at the Emerald Evening Gala on May 14.
The Green Building Alliance selected PIT’s new terminal for the project’s “bold, forward-thinking” approach, blending sustainability and community focus. The new terminal was also selected for being transformational, redefining what travelers experience at PIT while setting a high bar for sustainability, thoughtful design and community-centered thinking.
In addition, the Green Building Alliance also referenced the TMP’s commitment to green building principles and its stunning architecture, guided by nature, technology, and community.
