From 94,000 tons of concrete to 12,000 tons of steel, the Terminal Modernization Program at Pittsburgh International Airport will be a unique expression of Pittsburgh, providing an added spark to the region’s post-pandemic recovery.
Construction hasn’t gone vertical or subterranean yet, but some 50 contractors per day are busily preparing the site for Pittsburgh International Airport’s new modern terminal, parking garage, rental car facilities and entrance roadways. And the number—from workers onsite to volume of building materials—are set to increase over the next four years.
The $1.39 billion Terminal Modernization Program will transform Pittsburgh International Airport with a new consolidated 700,000-square-foot terminal, 3,300-space parking garage and more, all designed to improve the passenger experience, make facilities more operationally and cost-efficient, advance the region and lead the industry.
Details of the first month of early site construction were captured by three cameras installed on the roof of the Airside and Landside terminals by Coraopolis-based Multivista.
Among other activities, contractors have set up barricades and safe driving lanes on the west ramp between Concourses C and D. They have also begun saw-cutting concrete on the ramp for slab removal of some 300,000 square feet of material to prepare for the new terminal’s foundations.
The cameras also captured another newsworthy event in April—the arrival of the first-ever nonstop cargo flight from Helsinki to PIT on Finnair. See if you can spot it at the top of the screen near the end of Concourse C.
