Summer is the busiest time of year at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), and with the July 4 holiday falling on a Friday, the airport is preparing for large crowds throughout the week.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipates screening over 18.5 million travelers at airports nationwide from Tuesday, July 1, through Monday, July 7. The highest passenger volume is expected on Sunday, July 6, with approximately 2.9 million travelers.
PIT is expecting up to 250,000 travelers during this period, with the highest volume also anticipated on July 6.
Passengers should expect longer-than-normal lines at ticketing counters and security checkpoints, particularly between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., when the airport is at its busiest.
However, with proper planning, you can reduce the stress of your travel experience.
Before leaving for the airport
- Use www.flypittsburgh.com to make a parking reservation at your preferred lot, ensuring you get the best possible price.
- Confirm your flight status and gate information via your airline’s app or www.flypittsburgh.com. Keep in mind that while the weather may be clear locally, disruptions in other areas can impact air travel.
- Arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight, especially if you’re flying out early in the morning. AAA expects 72.2 million people to travel at least 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday period from Saturday, June 28, to Sunday, July 6, so allow for heavier than usual traffic before you head to the airport.
- Make sure your carry-on bags meet all TSA requirements. The agency has a list on its website of what you can bring in carry-on bags and checked luggage.
- Have a REAL ID or an alternative accepted ID, such as a valid passport, passport card or a military ID.
Picking up passengers arriving at PIT
- Confirm the flight status via the airline’s app or www.flypittsburgh.com.
- It is illegal to park on the side of the road while waiting for friends or family to arrive, and the Allegheny County Police will ticket you.
- The airport offers free 60-minute parking in the Extended Lot.
