To improve checkpoint efficiency and streamline passenger flow, especially during the early morning peak travel period, the Transportation Security Administration is changing where TSA PreCheck travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport will go for security clearance.

Starting May 5, passengers with TSA PreCheck will no longer be able to use the alternative checkpoint and will need to go to the main security checkpoint on the second level. The alternate checkpoint, which is on Level 3 Ticketing and across the road, will be for non-TSA PreCheck  travelers when open. Signs will be posted to inform passengers of the change.

Travelers enrolled in CLEAR and all general passengers will continue to use the main checkpoint. Additionally, general passengers will still be able to use the alternate checkpoint when open during peak travel times.

Travelers enrolled in TSA PreCheck don’t need to remove shoes, belts, light jackets, laptops or permitted liquids from their bags.

In announcing the change, TSA cited the increased passenger volume at PIT. The nearly 10 million passengers who traveled through PIT last year were the most in nearly two decades and surpassed pre-pandemic levels for the first time.

Travelers can also expect passenger screening canine teams working in the checkpoint areas. The canine teams are an added layer of security focused on identifying passengers who may be carrying an explosive device.

In another change, beginning May 4, all passenger screening checkpoints will be closed daily from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. when flights are not scheduled. Passengers cannot access the Airside Terminal or gate areas during those hours.

And on May 1, CLEAR will handle on-site TSA PreCheck enrollment at PIT. IDEMIA is the current enrollment provider at the airport, but its lease is not being renewed.

The transition is scheduled to take place over the coming weeks. Travelers who wish to sign up for TSA PreCheck or renew their membership will be able to do so at the CLEAR enrollment center near the main TSA checkpoint beginning May 1.

Pre-enrollment can begin online at https://www.clearme.com/tsa-precheck, and walk-ins will also be accepted.
