As someone who’s lived in Iceland for the past nine years, I can confidently say that summer here is unlike anything you’ll experience in a typical summer in the United States. If you’re imagining blazing heat, and constant A/C, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. Iceland has its own twist on summer, and it’s worth experiencing.
Summer, but Make it Refreshing
While the summer season is our warmest time of the year, instead of scorching temperatures that can reach the triple digits, we’d be lucky to get a high of 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Our cooler temperatures are a reminder that even though we don’t live in the Arctic Circle, our proximity to it means milder summer weather. Knowing what to pack and how to properly layer for this season is crucial to enjoying it to the fullest – you’ll thank me later.
But don’t let the cooler temps fool you. Iceland during summer is a hot destination for exploring natural wonders, spotting incredible wildlife, and learning about the country’s rich culture.

Endless Days = Limitless Adventures
Throughout June, July, and parts of August, Iceland experiences 24-hour bright days. While the sun technically dips below the horizon at night for a few hours, it never gets truly dark. The brightly lit sky late in the evening, or during the wee hours of the morning, add to the allure of Iceland’s summer magic.
This phenomenon, known as the midnight sun, opens a whole new world for travelers. Imagine visiting the iconic Skógafoss waterfall at midnight and having it almost entirely to yourself. Or driving deep into the untouched Highlands without worrying about daylight fading. Many visitors even opt to explore attractions around Iceland’s ring road during summer because it’s easier to navigate with lit up evening skies.
