Allegiant Air is bringing back service to a western city popular with spring break travelers.

On Tuesday, Allegiant announced it is adding nonstop service between Pittsburgh International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) beginning Feb. 7. The ultra-low-cost carrier will operate the nonstop flights twice a week through May 11.

Nonstop flights to Phoenix are for sale at Allegiant.com with one-way fares as low as $79.

Pittsburgh-Phoenix is part of a nationwide expansion that includes 44 new nonstop routes and three new cities announced by Allegiant on Tuesday, one of the largest in the airline’s history. Allegiant cites robust leisure travel demand as it expands its ultra-low-cost airfares to underserved communities with limited or no air service.

A core aspect of Allegiant’s business model is to provide service during periods with strong leisure demand, such as holidays, summer, weekends and school breaks.

“We’re excited to announce that Allegiant is expanding nationwide, offering even more travel options to our customers,” said Drew Wells, Allegiant’s chief commercial officer. “These additions reflect our ongoing commitment to meet customer demand. By connecting more cities, we’re making it easier for travelers to visit family and friends, access top leisure destinations and create new memories.”

The addition marks Allegiant’s return to the Pittsburgh-Phoenix market for the first time in three years. Allegiant previously offered twice weekly nonstop flights between PIT and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) from August 2021 to February 2022.

Allegiant becomes the third carrier offering nonstop service to Phoenix this spring. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines, two carriers with large bases at PHX and PIT’s largest airlines overall, each offer daily nonstop service to Phoenix on a year-round basis.

Phoenix will be Allegiant’s longest route from PIT, and the airline’s 15th overall city served nonstop from Pittsburgh.

The return of Phoenix service coincides with Allegiant’s 10th anniversary in Pittsburgh. Allegiant was among the first of the new ultra-low-cost carriers to serve PIT as the airport pivoted to become an origin-and-destination facility. Allegiant was subsequently followed by other ultra low-fare carriers, including Spirit, Frontier and Sun Country Airlines.

Since arriving in Pittsburgh in 2015, Allegiant has become a popular option for its model of serving leisure destinations at low fares through a point-to-point network that bypasses major hubs. In August, Allegiant reached a milestone at PIT when it surpassed 3 million passengers flown since it began service at the airport.

Terrible Towels to Titletown

Allegiant is also offering a lift for Steelers fans attending the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The airline is adding two roundtrip nonstop flights between PIT and Appleton International Airport (ATW) on April 23 and 26.

Flight 3883 will depart from Pittsburgh at 3:13 p.m. Eastern and arrives in Appleton at 3:58 p.m. Central. Flight 3882 departs from Appleton at 11:46 a.m. Central and arrives in Pittsburgh at 2:23 p.m. Eastern. Roundtrips for both dates are available for purchase at Allegiant.com.

Appleton is less than 35 miles from Lambeau Field, the home of the storied Green Bay Packers franchise and the adjacent Titletown District in downtown Green Bay, the expected site for draft day festivities. The draft is scheduled for April 24-26 with the highly anticipated first round selections of each team taking place the night of the 24th.

Like in Pittsburgh, Allegiant maintains a base in Appleton that will enable the airline to seamlessly operate scheduled flights between both cities for the draft.

The NFL Draft is one of the largest football attractions held each year, second only to the Super Bowl. An estimated 775,000 people attended the 2024 draft in Detroit, a new record for the event. In addition to hundreds of thousands of football fans, the draft brings representatives from the league’s 32 teams and top prospects from premier NCAA football conferences across the country.

Pittsburgh, with its rich football culture, is on tap to host the NFL Draft in 2026. The draft is expected to be a boon for the region and its tourism sector. Figures from VisitPITTSBURGH have estimated the total economic impact for previous host cities from between $120 million and $165 million.

Steelers fans are regarded among the best-traveled football fanbases. Fans wearing black and gold gear and waving Terrible Towels have created a spectacle at opposing teams’ stadiums in Atlanta, Denver, Indianapolis, Las Vegas and Washington this season.

Allegiant’s fights to Appleton are not the first time the airline has added service for Steelers fans. During the 2023 season, the airline added special nonstop flights to Las Vegas for fans attending the team’s Week 3 matchup against the Raiders, a game the Steelers won 24-18.

This season, Southwest added extra flights on its existing Atlanta and Las Vegas routes from Pittsburgh for Steelers fans attending the team’s games against the Falcons in Week 1 and Raiders in Week 7.
