The Flying Legends of Victory Tour touched down at Allegheny County Airport (AGC) last week, giving aviation enthusiasts a chance for an up-close look at two WWII aircraft: Maid in the Shade, a North American B-25 Mitchell, and Sentimental Journey, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress.

The vintage aircraft were on display from June 25-30 at AGC and were available for tours and rides.

The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona acquired their B-17 in 1978 after it had been used as a firefighting water bomber. In 1981 Airbase Arizona acquired their B-25; prior to its current role as a show plane, the B-25 was used as a bug sprayer in the southern United States.

Both aircraft were brought back to life after extensive restoration, said Mike Garrett, Tour Director at the Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona.

“We have spare parts and there are FAA repair stations that can make parts as well, new parts to replace the old ones,” he said. “We have a way of getting a hold of parts for both of our planes.”

The planes are on a 24-week cross country tour, since it is too hot to fly in the summer months in Arizona, Garrett said. “They will fly into a few cities on the east coast and Canada before going back out to the western part of the country.”
