The Snowball Express is back at Pittsburgh International Airport, and despite its early morning kickoff time, dozens of people showed up to spread holiday warmth.

The annual event, hosted by the Gary Sinise Foundation and American Airlines, honors Gold Star families who have lost service members in combat.

Family members took off from PIT at about 6:30 a.m., Dec. 7, with a stop in Charlotte, North Carolina, before reaching Orlando, Florida, – and Disney World.

Sending the travelers on their way were staff from Allegheny County Airport Authority staff, members of the American Airlines team, representatives from the Gary Sinise Foundation, military representatives, Patriot Guard Riders and other volunteers.

The holiday event included a winter gate makeover, snowball fight and a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus.

This year, the Snowball Express is allowing even more families to trade winter weather for Florida sunshine. This Saturday, Dec. 14, the event will return to honor families of fallen first responders and firefighters.

Special thanks to Blue Sky News photographer Beth Hollerich who captured some special moments from the event, which can be found in the slideshow below!
