The city that built America is now building the world’s future.
While the steel mills that churned out the raw materials for the nation’s growth remain a legendary part of Pittsburgh, new industries have taken hold in our region’s economy and are beginning to thrive.
At Hazelwood Green’s Mill 19, a research and development center focusing on robotics and manufacturing has sprouted within the shell of a former steel mill. The symbolism is hard to miss.
At Pittsburgh International Airport, nearly 9,000 acres of land is being transformed into Neighborhood 91, the first development in the world to both condense and connect all components of the additive manufacturing and 3D printing supply chain into one powerful production ecosystem. Just a short distance away on airport property, crews are constructing a first-of-its-kind electrical microgrid powered by the airport’s own gas wells and solar field.
In a recent visit to both sites, Pittsburgh International Airport CEO Christina Cassotis explains in the video above how the developments are inspired by Pittsburgh’s manufacturing past and herald a promising future for the entire region.
