Recent cold temperatures and snow likely have Pittsburghers thinking of warm weather escapes.
In anticipation of rising demand spurred by spring break travel, and continuing into the early summer months, airlines are planning to ramp up flight schedules by adding additional flights, resuming seasonal destinations and launching new routes.
Here are some new routes and returning service starting soon at Pittsburgh International Airport:
Miami
On Sunday, Southwest Airlines resumed nonstop service between Pittsburgh and Miami for the first time since 2022. Southwest is scheduled to operate the route on select days of the week through May 31.
This gives travelers another nonstop to South Florida from PIT, which also includes American Airlines to Miami; Southwest and Spirit Airlines to Fort Lauderdale (FLL); and Allegiant Air to West Palm Beach (PBI).
Miami has been a hot destination for Pittsburghers lately, with fans traveling to the Orange Bowl, which saw Penn State face Notre Dame for the College Football Playoff Semifinal on Jan. 9. American operated additional flights on its Pittsburgh-Miami service for fans to attend the game at Hard Rock Stadium.
Phoenix
Starting Feb. 7, Allegiant will begin nonstop service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) from Pittsburgh. This will mark the return of Allegiant to the Pittsburgh-Phoenix market, which it flew via Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (AZA) until 2022.
Allegiant will operate the route seasonally on Mondays and Fridays through early May for spring break traffic. Announced in November, PIT-PHX was part of a 44-route expansion by Allegiant to capitalize on leisure travel this spring.
With Allegiant, three carriers now serve the Pittsburgh-Phoenix market nonstop. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines also operate the route with daily flights.
Cancun, Mexico
More seasonal service is returning from Pittsburgh to one of the largest hotspots for spring breakers.
Tour operators Apple Vacations and Vacation Express will resume weekly nonstop charter flights, operated by Allegiant, to Cancun starting Feb. 15. Southwest will also resume its seasonal, weekly nonstop service on the Pittsburgh-Cancun route beginning March 8.
Both carriers join American on the route, which resumed its weekend service to Cancun in November and will operate flights through May 3.
Los Angeles
Beginning April 4, American will launch nonstop service to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). This marks the first time since 2017 the carrier will operate the PIT-LAX route, an addition welcomed by many Pittsburgh-area business and leisure travelers.
Operating daily, year-round, American’s flight restores network carrier service on the Pittsburgh-Los Angeles route. The flight will connect to markets in Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand served through LAX by American and its Oneworld Alliance partner Qantas.
In addition, Breeze Airways, which began serving the PIT-LAX route in 2023, moved up the resumption of its nonstop service from May 2 to March 12. Breeze will add a third weekly flight to Los Angeles in March and expand to five weekly flights by early June.
Reykjavik, Iceland
Following a successful first year in Pittsburgh, Icelandair will bring back its seasonal, nonstop service to Reykjavik, Iceland, on April 17. This year’s resumption of the Pittsburgh-Reykjavik route, operating four times a week, comes a month sooner than its initial launch date of May, allowing travelers to fly nonstop to Iceland earlier in the spring.
Reykjavik on Icelandair is one of two European markets served nonstop from Pittsburgh. British Airways is increasing to daily service to London Heathrow starting March 30.
Travelers have taken advantage of Icelandair’s service not only to explore Iceland but to connect to more than 25 destinations throughout Europe. When connecting, travelers have the choice to add an Iceland stopover to their Icelandair itinerary for up to seven days at no additional cost.
More flights added by carriers
Other routes from PIT will soon return or see additional capacity through the first few months of 2025.
Markets served seasonally on Allegiant will return throughout the spring, including Nashville on March 6 and Destin/Fort Walton Beach April 2. Allegiant will also resume seasonal service to Myrtle Beach on May 15 and Austin on May 23.
Meanwhile, Southwest will resume nonstop flights to Sarasota on Feb. 13, not long before the Pittsburgh Pirates begin spring training in nearby Bradenton.
Additionally, Frontier Airlines will bring back nonstops to Orlando on Feb. 14, and resume flights to Philadelphia on April 1 and Atlanta on May 23 – two markets added by the airline last year.
Meanwhile, Air Canada will resume daily flights to Montreal starting May 1 while Sun Country Airlines will bring back its seasonal flights to Minneapolis on May 29.
Breeze will also bring back seasonal service to several markets added by the airline in recent years, including Portland, Maine, and Tampa on May 1 and Norfolk/Virginia Beach on May 2.
To the West Coast, United Airlines will resume its second daily flight to San Francisco on March 30, with Alaska Airlines doing the same for its Seattle nonstop service starting May 15. Breeze (May 2) and Southwest (June 7) will also resume seasonal, nonstop flights to San Diego that launched last year.
