As Pittsburgh International Airport prepares to embark on an ambitious five-year journey with a billion-dollar Terminal Modernization Program, we thought it would be timely to look back at past construction milestones in the development of the state’s second-largest airport.
In March 1985, Greater Pittsburgh International Airport opened its air traffic control tower, now the control tower for Pittsburgh International Airport. At the time, the 227-foot facility was the FAA’s tallest tower nationwide. Its cost of $12 million translates to about $28 million in 2018 dollars.
Planning and construction took about four years.
The 20-story tower has been a cornerstone of the airport for three decades and will continue to stand watch as PIT evolves for the future.
